The heart-pounding thrill of playing blackjack can't be beat. Fortunately, the dealer can be, but with the odds stacked against you, it's not an easy task. In developing your own blackjack strategy, remember: the player has many choices, while the dealer has none. Read on for how you can turn those choices into money in the bank.

Blackjack utilizes a standard deck of 52 cards and while some online casinos feature single decks, the majority feature double decks or four, six and eight decks of cards.

Blackjack players have two nicknames for all hands: no-brainers and agonizers. It's a no-brainer when you have a hard hand (one without an ace) totaling 17 or more.

When this is the case, stand against everything. On hard hands of 11 or less, hit until you reach 12 or more. On some of these hands, when appropriate, double down (make an additional bet that equals or is less than your original bet; the dealer will give you one additional card). The agonizing hands are the ones that total 12-16. The following rules will help make your blackjack strategy on an agonizer a little less painful.

BLACKJACK STRATEGY ON HARD HANDS

> When your hand has a total of 12, hit against the dealer's 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 or ace until you reach 17 or more. Stand against a dealer's 4, 5 or 6.
> If your hand totals 13, 14, 15 or 16, hit against the dealer's 7, 8, 9, 10 or ace. Stand when the dealer has 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. If surrender (giving up half your bet and not playing out your hand) is allowed, surrender your 15 against the dealer's 10 and your 16 against the dealer's 9, 10 or ace.
> When your hand totals 9, double down against the dealer's 3, 4, 5 and 6. Hit against a dealer's 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 and ace.
> When your hand totals 10, double down against the dealer's 2-9. Hit against a dealer's 10 and ace until you get 17 or more.
> When your hand totals 11, double down against the dealer's 2-10. Hit against a dealer's ace until you get 17 or more.

BLACKJACK STRATEGY ON SOFT HANDS

Always keep in mind that when you hit your soft hand, eventually, it will become a hard hand. You will then follow the strategies for hard hitting and standing
> For a soft 13 or a soft 14, double down against the dealer's 5 and 6. Hit against everything else.
> For a soft 15 or a soft 16, double down against the dealer's 4, 5 and 6.
> For a soft 17, double down against the dealer's 3, 4, 5 and 6. Hit against everything else.
> For a soft 18, double down against the dealer's 3, 4, 5 and 6. Stand against the dealer's 2, 7, 8 and ace. Hit against the dealer's 9 and 10.
> For a soft 19 or a soft 20, stand against everything.

BLACKJACK STRATEGY ON SPLITTING PAIRS

Most online casinos allow players to split pairs, and some allow players to re-split if they receive a third and perhaps a fourth card of the same value. Wise pair splitting is a blackjack strategy that will put money in your pocket.
> When you're dealt two aces, always split them.
> When you're dealt two 8s, split them too. You'll even split your 8-8 against a dealer's 10 or ace. However, surrender an 8-8 against a dealer's 10 if surrender is allowed.
> When you're dealt a 2-2 or 3-3 pair, split against the dealer's 2-7 and hit against the dealer's 8, 9, 10 or ace until you get to 17 or more.
> Depending on the rules of the online casino, the hand of 4-4 is played in two distinct ways. If the casino allows doubling down after splitting pairs, you should split against the dealer's 5 and 6. Hit against everything else. However, if the casino doesn't allow doubling down after splits, you should simply hit the hand against the dealer's up cards
> Never split a 5-5 pair. Treat it as 10 and double down against the dealer's 2-9. Hit against a dealer's 10 and ace.
> If you're dealt a 6-6, split against the dealer's 2-6. Hit against everything else.
> If you're dealt a 7-7, split against the dealer's 2-7. Hit against everything else.
> If you have a 9-9, split against the dealer's 2-6 and against a dealer's 8 and 9. Stand against the dealer's 7, 10 and ace.
> Never split 10s
